Things Behind the Anti-Spyware Technology
From the word itself, anti-spyware literally means against spyware. So before explaining what anti-spyware does and how it works, it is best to first talk about what a spyware is to fully understand the concept.
A spyware is generally a malicious program or code that installs itself on one’s personal computer. Spyware manages to get in to the operating system and embeds itself there without the knowledge of the user. So how exactly does this happen? Common culprits are the famous peer-to-peer file sharing programs that are free to download from the internet. Spyware usually piggybacks with this type of application.
Other ways that one can get spyware are installing other freeware programs, installing web browser enhancements, and clicking on pop-up windows about some advertisements. Spyware claims not to harm computers like viruses do. But the effects of what they actually do are also as damaging. Spyware basically spies on the computer where it is at and sends information about the user, the computer, files and internet usage to someone else without the user knowing it. The worst thing that it can do is obtain the passwords of the user to all important accounts and use those against him.
The good news is there are several ways to eliminate them and prevent them from getting in to one’s computer. One way is to have an anti-spyware program. Now, how does this work and how can it eliminate spyware?
Anti-spyware products are just like anti-virus applications in such a way that they search the computer of known spyware programs. If they find one, they will try to remove it or disable it, at least. But how exactly do they recognize a spyware program? All files have their own, unique identification as well, known as fingerprints. These fingerprints of common and well-known spyware programs are stored in the anti-spyware program’s database. These are what they use to recognize spyware files that can be hidden deep within your operating system files. The anti-spyware program also has a feature that will not recognize other data files or genuine applications so one can be assured that the program will only delete spyware files and nothing else. Most anti-spyware products will still keep the spyware on its database so the user can again enable them in case they want them back. This is common to freeware programs when users would tolerate the spyware to still be able to use the free program.
However, it is not really that easy to disable or remove spyware as it may seem. Most of the spyware creators right now include so-called “satellite” files with the spyware programs. These satellite files are small codes that also hide in the computer. What they do is to install the spyware back when they detect that it has been deleted. The anti-spyware detects a spyware, deletes it, and then eventually finds it back again when it does another search. That will be a tedious work for the anti-spyware program and can be very frustrating to the user. Some good anti-spyware products have advanced technology that also combats these satellite files. These types of anti-spyware programs have their own satellite that overwrites the spyware file with a blank space. In essence, it disables the spyware application because the file does not contain anything, but also makes it appear to the spyware’s satellite that the file is still there.
Spyware is really a huge problem nowadays for computer and internet users. One should really be aware of the different ways to fight them, one being the anti-spyware products, to prevent greater damage in the future.
